State Street Ballet Summer Program


Summer Intensive 2008
Santa Barbara, California
June 23 - July 18, 2008

The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive is for serious ballet students from 12-21 years of age with a minimum of three years of dance experience, who wish to work with professional dancers and nationally recognized instructors. The student's commitment to progress will be fully supported by technique classes, personal coaching and feedback from our excellent faculty. In addition, students participate in a fully staged performance on Friday July 18, 2008 at 4:00pm. Tickets for this performance will be on sale at the State Street Ballet office. They are $20 for adults, and $16 for children under12 years.

The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive provides young dancers with the opportunity to receive the individual attention necessary to achieve substantial technical progress in a supportive environment.

About State Street Ballet
State Street Ballet is a fully professional ballet company with an innovative program. Directed by Rodney Gustafson, formerly with the American Ballet Theatre, the company combines superb classical technique with a contemporary flair to create ballet that is enlightening, enriching, and entertaining. State Street Ballet has achieved excellent critical acclaim for its performances throughout the United States, Taiwan, and China. The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive is held in our fully equipped professional facility located at 322 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 With over 10,000 square feet of space and state-of-the-art suspended floors, the beautiful studios are conveniently situated close to downtown shopping and dining as well as Santa Barbara's breathtaking beaches and marina.

What
Curriculum — We emphasize improvement, clarification and strength in the following areas:

• Choreography
• Performance skills
• Education — dance related seminars

We provide students the opportunity to learn and perform excellent choreography, which ranges from classical to contemporary in style. The artistry of dance is expressed through choreography and we place a strong emphasis on its value to students.

 

Program Requirements

Class Attire
The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive requires all female students to wear black leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers for all technique classes. The women must also have an adequate supply of pointe shoes, a black character skirt (approximately 17 inches in length), black character shoes (character shoes are optional), and jazz shoes. Male students are required to wear black tights, white t-shirts, and black ballet slippers.

 

Conduct
Students attending the State Street Ballet Summer Intensive are expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct. Students are expected to follow classroom and studio rules, as well as the rules of the housing supervisors. Any drinking of alcoholic beverages, use of drugs, or smoking is prohibited. Students in violation of our standards will be sent home with no refunds. State Street Ballet prides itself on the quality conduct of its students.

 

Where you will stay
Located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and backed by magnificent mountains, Santa Barbara is safe and easy to get around. Accommodations are at the University of California at Santa Barbara, located 15 minutes from the studio. Students stay in dormitory suites. Bedding and towels are available. Accommodations include supervision, meals, and transportation. Counselors are available to handle any medical emergency that may arise. Students may also seek their own housing arrangements. *Please note that there are no refunds on housing.

Transportation Logistics
For airport pick up, provide us your flight number, airline and time of arrival at Santa Barbara Airport by emailing us. We will bring you to State Street Ballet's studio.

Those arriving at LAX (Los Angeles Airport), please take the Santa Barbara Airbus to the Santa Barbara Raddison Hotel. You can make reservation with Santa Barbara Airbus at 805-964-7759 (www.sbairbus.com). One Way is $42 and round trip costs $80. Travel time from Los Angeles is anywhere from 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours. Please notify us of estimated time of arrival at the Raddison Hotel.
