About State Street Ballet State Street Ballet is a fully professional ballet company with an innovative program. Directed by Rodney Gustafson, formerly with the American Ballet Theatre, the company combines superb classical technique with a contemporary flair to create ballet that is enlightening, enriching, and entertaining. State Street Ballet has achieved excellent critical acclaim for its performances throughout the United States, Taiwan, and China. The summer intensive is a part of the State Street Ballet's commitment to the education of talented young dancers. Opportunities for apprenticeships are available.
Where The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive is held in our fully equipped professional facility located at 2285 Las Positas Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93105 With over 10,000 square feet of space and state-of-the-art suspended floors, the beautiful studios are conveniently situated close to downtown shopping and dining as well as Santa Barbara's breathtaking beaches and marina.

We provide students the opportunity to learn and perform excellent choreography, which ranges from classical to contemporary in style. The artistry of dance is expressed through choreography and we place a strong emphasis on its value to students.

TO APPLY BY VIDEO OR WRITTEN APPLICATION
Step 1. To get an application, download the PDF. If you have a question that is not answered on the website call (805) 563-3262 and leave your name, address, email, and telephone number.
Step 2. Complete and return the application and DVD on or before Friday March 27, 2009 to State Street Ballet, 2285 Las Positas Rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93105. DVDs should be no more than five minutes in length, and should include adagio at the barre and center, turns, small jumps, and grand allegro (big jumps). Include a photo in first arabesque (photo & DVD will not be returned), letter of recommendation from current instructor, and a $20 non-refundable application fee payable to State Street Ballet. Visa / Master Card accepted, please include card type, number, and expiration date.
* Early registration will get priority status and applications will be considered without a DVD. A photo is required.
Step 3. A status letter concerning acceptance will be mailed within 14 days after receiving your application.
Step 4. Following a letter of acceptance to the program, a non-refundable deposit of $500 is due immediately to ensure placement. The deposit deadline is Friday April 10, 2009.
Step 5. Balance of program fees ($3,000 for housing & tuition) is due by Friday May 8, 2009.
Program Requirements
Class Attire The State Street Ballet Summer Intensive requires all female students to wear black leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers for all technique classes. The women must also have an adequate supply of pointe shoes, a black character skirt (approximately 17 inches in length), black character shoes (character shoes are optional), and jazz shoes. Male students are required to wear black tights, white t-shirts, and black ballet slippers.
Conduct Students attending the State Street Ballet Summer Intensive are expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct. Students are expected to follow classroom and studio rules, as well as the rules of the housing supervisors. Any drinking of alcoholic beverages, use of drugs, or smoking is prohibited. Students in violation of our standards will be sent home with no refunds. State Street Ballet prides itself on the quality conduct of its students.
Where you will stay Located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and backed by magnificent mountains, Santa Barbara is safe and easy to get around. Accommodations are at the University of California at Santa Barbara, located 15 minutes from the studio. Students stay in dormitory suites. Bedding and towels are available. Accommodations include supervision, meals, and transportation. Counselors are available to handle any medical emergency that may arise. Students may also seek their own housing arrangements.
*Please note that there are no refunds on housing.
To apply by audition:
Attend one of the scheduled auditions. Bring a teacher recommendation letter and a photo in first arabesque. There will be a $20 audition fee and you will be required to fill out an application. Students will be notified of acceptance within 14 days following the audition date.
**Students interested in apprenticeship positions with the company must audition in person.
