State Street Ballet Touring Shows: 2018-19
State Street Ballet goes on tour for two months every season, bringing original dance and education programs to theaters and schools around the world. With standing ovations from China to Chile, and a 90% rebooking rate, we are very proud of our past touring successes and we eagerly look forward to future adventures.
The world's most beloved fairy-tale comes to life through music, dance, and theatrical magic! State Street Ballet’s Cinderella features original choreography by Founder and Artistic Director Rodney Gustafson with additional choreography by Marina Fliagina, set design by Jean-Francois Revon, and costuming by A. Christina Giannini.
After its very successful premiere in Santa Barbara in 2005, Cinderella was selected to tour the Eastern United States (from New Hampshire to Florida) and sold out every performance. Part of its appeal is the incredible melding of visual backdrops, movement and sound. Digital animation projected onto a see-through scrim is used to help a pumpkin transform into a carriage, while the lead dancer visible behind the scrim changes from her costume of rags to the princess dressed for a ball.
Inspired by Georges Bizet’s blazingly popular score, this original full-length production has dazzled audiences from coast to coast. Choreographer William Soleau retells the tale of the magnetically beautiful gypsy and her desperate lover in a contemporary ballet style that weaves together both classical and modern influences. Intricate storytelling, enigmatic choreography, and Bizet’s passionate, immortal music make this Carmen a true tour-de-force of theatrical drama.
Once in a lifetime a production comes along that is destined to be legendary. This is it, the spectacular Carmina Burana, featuring breathtaking choreography by William Soleau and the heart-pounding music of Carl Orff’s 19th century masterpiece.
Carmina Burana premiered in 2008 to sold-out audiences at the majestic Granada Theatre, and reprised that in 2015 with an even larger and more successful production. This exquisite ballet from resident choreographer William Soleau is set to Carl Orff’s iconic and mesmerizing score, inspired by 24 illuminated poems and texts from the 12th and 13th centuries. Described by Orff as a “scenic cantata”, the main philosophies center on the changeability of human fate – the Wheel of Fortune. Soleau’s brilliant choreography brings to life through movement the numerous themes captured within the poems – the freshness of romance, the beauty of spring, the exuberance of tavern life, gluttony, and gambling, the passions of unbridled love, the fear of death, and the zest of the sinner’s confessions.
No holiday season is complete without a trip to the theatre to see The Nutcracker! One of State Street Ballet’s most enchanting productions, this magical story is a favorite for audiences of all ages. The magnificent, opulent sets, complete with a gloriously gigantic Christmas tree, came all the way from Russia to set the backdrop for glittering snowflakes, waltzing flowers, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her enchanting castle of characters.
